PREPARING FOR DEPARTURE
WHAT TO TAKE TO AUSTRALIA:
CLOTHING: Water-proof/ leather jacket,
jeans/ trousers, sweatshirts/ jumper, t-shirts, track-suits, 2 or
3 formal outfits. Water-proof walking shoes/ joggers, leather dress
shoes (Quality clothing and shoes are quite expensive in Australia).
PERSONAL ITEMS: Toiletries, underwear,
a bath towel, sewing kit, alarm clock, collapsible umbrella, dictionary/
thesaurus, favourite sports equipment, international drivers license.
EXTRAS: Rice cooker or pressure pan,
radio/ cassette player and tapes, a zip-up sleeping bag stationery
such as A-4 size lined paper, pens, pencils, glue, scissors, erasers,
etc.
FOOD: South Asian foodstuffs are
freely available in Australia, however they are imported and can
be expensive. To save customs difficulties only take sealed packs
of tea, coffee, herbs, spices, masalas, etc., which must be declared
on entry to Australia.
GIFTS: You can take small token gifts
of foodstuff (tea and masalas) as above, to show your appreciation
to members of the international unit who have helped to make your
studies in Australia possible and for those who help your settling
in process.
FURTHER ADVICE:
The standard voltage for electrical appliances in
Australia is 240 volts. Standard plugs in Australia have three flat
pins – you will need to purchase an adapter so that you can
use your Indian appliances in Australia. These adaptors are available
from most electrical retail stores.
If you wear glasses, you should take a spare pair
of spectacles or contact lenses as these will be expensive to replace
in Australia. You should take along your optical prescription.
If you take medication take a prescription with you.
If you take drugs into Australia, obtain a letter from your doctor
certifying that these are required for your medical treatment. Customs
may ask you to explain the purpose of your medication and will confiscate
it if they are in the least bit suspicious.
Have your teeth examined and get any necessary dental
work done at home because this is not covered by your basic overseas
student medical insurance.
If you believe you realistically qualify to apply
for credit towards your degree on the basis of studies completed
in South Asia or if you plan to articulate to a higher level course
after your present course is complete, you should take certified
true copies of your academic transcripts, the reading list and a
syllabus handbook from that institution. Please understand that
any claim for advanced standing or credit is subject to assessment
by the faculty and that the faculty’s decision will be final
and binding.
A personal computer you have owned for twelve months
can be brought into Australia without paying duty if you intend
to re-export it when you leave Australia. You will be required to
prove the date of purchase. Computers are much cheaper in Australia
than in South Asia. It is thus recommended that you sell or lease
your current computer and repurchase a more advanced one on your
arrival in Australia.
WHAT NOT TO TAKE:
The following items should not be brought into Australia:
Illicit drugs and foodstuff, weapons and firearms, animal and plant
products. Take note that serious penalties will apply if illegal
or undeclared items are carried into Australia. Many of the countries
transited by South Asian students have extremely harsh penalties
for the import of illegal good eg: death penalty got illegal drug
imports. |
